Coming Attractions: Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008)

on DVD July 29th

It's happened many times before: I'll be in Santa Cruz, either at the Boardwalk arcade or crossing the train bridge nearby, and I'll start reminiscing fondly about Lost Boys (1987). I've been a fan of Lost Boys for as long as I can remember (who wouldn't love Kiefer Sutherland as a vampire vs. Corey and Corey?) and I've always thought it deserved a sequel. Now there is one. Lost Boys: The Tribe will be hitting the DVD market later this month. I have seen the trailer, and I've read the press release, and I am stoked. Corey Feldman, the real star of the original, returns as Edgar Frog, the vampire slaying comic aficionado. I always like a character like Frog - the only guy who really knows how much ass needs to get kicked.

And it looks like a lot of ass gets kicked in The Tribe. The 70 second trailer packs a lot mayhem. I applaud the people behind the scenes (director P.J. Pesce and writer Hans Rodionoff) for upping the action. The first movie is great and all, but I always wanted to see more people die. Especially if Santa Carla was the murder capital of the world! It's understandable knowing the audience that movie was marketed to. Now the Lost Boys audience has grown up, yours truly included. We want to see that blood. Still, I can tell from the trailer they didn't abandon the comedy inherent in the vampire-in-a-surf-community scenario.

Basically, it looks like they're treating the fans right with this sequel. The entire plot is an homage to the original, featuring siblings (this time a brother and sister) whose parents die, forcing them to move in with their aunt (rather than uncle) in a sleepy beach community (this time Luna Bay). The sister (played by the super-hot Moneca Delain) gets duped into partaking of the vampiric blood wine, and the brother enlists the help of Edgar Frog to kill the lead vampire (played by Angus Sutherland - younger brother of Kiefer) before it's too late. I'm sure there will be plenty of references in the scripts for fans to geek off. There's mention in the press release of "appearances by Jamison Newlander and Corey Haim from The Lost Boys", and the special features on the DVD include "Two alternate endings featuring a familiar face from the 1987 Original." I'm especially excited to see "Edgar Frog's Guide to Coming Back Alive — A 'How To Kill' doc showcasing various weapons and methods for disposing of vampires. Hosted by Corey Feldman in character as Edgar Frog." Y'know Feldman loves the fans, cause the fans love Feldman. It's kinda spooky how much he still looks like he did back in 1987, too. If the dialog in the new movie is anything like it was in the original, I'll be sold. "Flies and the undead go together like bullets and guns." Classic.
